An Interview with the Author

Q. Why did you write The Desert Between Us and how long did it take to write it?

A. I wrote this love-after-loss story to scratch an itch—and to inspire others. When I was eleven and my father lost my mother to cancer prematurely, I had so many questions. Why did she have to die? How would my life be different? How would my father’s life change? And as I grew up, I wondered can you ever love the same again if you lose your spouse—your soulmate? I was also motivated to help others find victory over grief. I spent ten years thinking about writing this novel--and two years writing it due to the interruptions of everyday life.

Q. So your father was your primary inspiration?

A. Yes. He was a very strong man raising six children alone. He grieved in private but we all knew he felt the hollow, painful vacuum in his life. For forty years, he often said, “Not a day goes by that I don’t think of your mother.” They had a marriage I aspire to—and I’ve been happily married 43 years.

Q. Why would readers want to read this novel?

A. We have all suffered grief at some point in our lives. I think The Desert Between Us can help readers believe, no matter what they are going through, there is reason to have hope. I’m confident they will relate to the characters, enjoy the beautiful Santa Barbara setting, and the powerful dialogue between Chase Kincaid (the father) and his eight-year-old son, Clay. Often Clay is asking his father questions I wondered about when I lost my mom as a boy. And one more thing. I paint a picture of the beauty of friendship in this story as Chase's best friend, Jack, stands by him to dull the pain. Friendship is so vital to recovery from grief.

Q. So, would you say, to some degree, you are in the story?

A. No, not me—but my heart is spilled over the pages.

Q. Are there any major plot twists or surprises?

A. That’s a surprise.

Q. The book cover is really intriguing but with your title I expected a “desert.” Why a treehouse?

A. You will have to read the book to answer that question. But I promise, you won’t be disappointed.

Q. When will The Desert Between Us be officially released?

A. April 23, 2024.

Q. Can we PRE-ORDER it now?

A. Yes, and please do. Just click on the link above or below and place your order. Currently, there is a limited-time Christmas shipping discount.

Q. Is there anything else you want to tell us about this NEW novel?

A. Just that you may laugh and cry, but most importantly, you will be reminded--in an entertaining way--just how important it is to cherish your loved ones every day. I like to say, “The Desert Between Us will give you “permission” for both tears AND cheers.” It is a story of victory.

Q. Finally, if you could have ANY gift this Christmas, what would it be?

A. It would be to have my parents here--together once more--to read this book. They would see the depth of their love on these pages, and their son--who was so changed by it--he wrote a novel about it.
